Heat Pump Water Heater Rebates in Colorado (2026): Xcel, Federal & HEAR Stacked
Heat Pump Water Heater Rebates in Colorado (2026): Xcel, Federal & HEAR Stacked
Heat pump water heaters are having the same incentive moment heat pump HVAC had two years ago — except fewer Colorado homeowners know about it. In 2026, the rebate stack on a qualifying unit is large enough to change the buying decision entirely. Here's what's on the table and how the pieces combine.
The 2026 Colorado HPWH Incentive Stack
| Program | Amount | Who Qualifies |
|---|---|---|
| Xcel Energy rebate | $2,250 flat | Xcel customers installing an ENERGY STAR certified heat pump water heater |
| Federal 25C tax credit | 30% of cost, up to $2,000 | Most homeowners with federal tax liability; claimed at tax time |
| HEAR (income-qualified) | Up to $1,750 | Households under AMI limits, in regions with remaining funding (see below) |
For many projects, the Xcel rebate plus the federal credit covers a substantial share of the installed cost — and the Xcel portion is applied through your installer, not chased by mail-in forms. We submit it for every system we install.
HEAR funding status — act by region
As of spring 2026, HEAR Region 1 (Front Range) funds were fully reserved, but Region 2 counties — including much of our mountain service territory — still have funding. If you're an income-qualified household in Summit, Eagle, or another Region 2 county, the window is open but finite. Check your county's income limits on our Colorado AMI chart.
The Xcel Rebate, Explained
- It's flat: $2,250 regardless of tank size, for ENERGY STAR certified units — which includes the Rheem ProTerra line we install (up to 4.07 UEF).
- Account type matters: the program is aimed at customers replacing gas water heaters or upgrading electric ones — eligibility details depend on your Xcel account configuration, which we confirm during your free estimate so there are no surprises.
- It stacks with the federal credit: the 25C tax credit is calculated on your cost, and both can apply to the same project.
The Federal 25C Credit
The Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit covers 30% of a qualifying heat pump water heater project, capped at $2,000, claimed on your federal return for the year of installation. It's a credit, not a deduction — it reduces your tax bill dollar for dollar. Keep your invoice and the manufacturer's certificate; we provide both with every installation.
The Smart Play: Pair It With a Heat Pump HVAC Project
The 25C credit has separate caps for heat pump HVAC and heat pump water heaters, and Xcel's HVAC and water-heating rebates are separate programs too. Homeowners converting to a cold-climate mini-split can often add a HPWH to the same project and collect both stacks with one contractor, one electrical plan, and one permit trip. Our Xcel heat pump rebate guide covers the HVAC side.
Rebate reality check: program amounts and funding change during the year — HEAR regions have already shifted once in 2026. The figures above are current as of publication; we verify every program's status when we quote your project, so your estimate reflects what's actually claimable that week.
Rebate FAQ
Can renters or landlords claim these?
Xcel rebates follow the account holder; the federal credit generally requires the taxpayer to own the home. Landlord scenarios vary — ask us and your tax preparer.
Do all heat pump water heaters qualify?
No — ENERGY STAR certification is the gate for the Xcel rebate, and the federal credit has its own efficiency requirements. Every Rheem ProTerra configuration we install qualifies for both.

A free estimate is the only accurate answer — your electrical panel, location, and account type all move the number. Call (970) 798-0096 and we'll confirm the full stack for your address.
