R454B Mini-Splits in Colorado β The Future-Proof Choice
R410A is being phased out. R454B (Puron Advance) is the EPA-approved replacement with 78% lower global warming potential β and it’s available now. Here’s everything Colorado homeowners need to know.
What Is R454B and Why Does It Matter?
R454B β sold under the trade name Puron Advance by Carrier, and used in Cooper & Hunter’s PEAQ series β is the next-generation refrigerant replacing R410A in residential and light commercial heat pumps and air conditioners.
The EPA’s AIM Act (American Innovation and Manufacturing Act) mandated a phase-down of high-GWP refrigerants including R410A starting in 2025. New residential HVAC systems are transitioning to lower-GWP alternatives, with R454B being the primary replacement for heat pumps and mini-splits.
R454B has a Global Warming Potential (GWP) of 466 β compared to R410A’s 2,088. That’s a 78% reduction in climate impact per unit of refrigerant leaked.
Is R454B Safe?
R454B is classified A2L β meaning it is mildly flammable (like natural gas, but much less so). The “A” means low toxicity; the “2L” means it can burn under specific conditions with a slow flame spread rate. In real-world residential installations, this requires:
- Leak detection sensors in some applications
- Technicians trained and certified for A2L handling
- Slightly modified installation practices
- Code-compliant refrigerant volumes (typically within limits for residential)
We are A2L certified and have been installing R454B systems since their commercial availability. Safe handling is standard practice for our team.
Refrigerant Comparison
| Refrigerant | GWP | Status |
|---|---|---|
| R22 | 1,810 | Phased out 2020 |
| R410A | 2,088 | Phase-down 2025+ |
| R454B | 466 | Current standard |
| R32 | 675 | Daikin/Fujitsu now |
| R290 (propane) | 3 | Niche/portable use |
AIM Act Timeline
- 2025: R410A production/import phase-down begins (40% reduction)
- 2026β2028: Further R410A reductions; new equipment transition accelerates
- 2025+: R454B, R32, R466A become standard in new equipment
- Existing R410A systems: Can still be serviced with reclaimed refrigerant indefinitely
R454B Systems We Install in Colorado
Cooper & Hunter PEAQ Series
Available now in 18,000β55,000 BTU. Up to 18.6 SEER2. R454B refrigerant. Perfect for larger spaces. Qualifies for Xcel rebates.
Daikin R32 Systems
Daikin’s Aurora and Atmosphera lines use R32 (GWP 675) β already a major improvement over R410A and available today across all tonnages.
Fujitsu R32 Airstage
Fujitsu’s newer Airstage lineup uses R32 refrigerant. The legacy Halcyon XLTH is R410A β being transitioned. Ask us about current availability.
If you have an existing R410A mini-split, you can continue to service it as normal. Reclaimed and recycled R410A will remain available for years. There is no rush to replace a working system solely due to the refrigerant transition β but when it’s time to replace, moving to R454B or R32 is the smart choice.
