R454B Mini-Splits in Colorado β€” The Future-Proof Choice

R410A is being phased out. R454B (Puron Advance) is the EPA-approved replacement with 78% lower global warming potential β€” and it’s available now. Here’s everything Colorado homeowners need to know.

What Is R454B and Why Does It Matter?

R454B β€” sold under the trade name Puron Advance by Carrier, and used in Cooper & Hunter’s PEAQ series β€” is the next-generation refrigerant replacing R410A in residential and light commercial heat pumps and air conditioners.

The EPA’s AIM Act (American Innovation and Manufacturing Act) mandated a phase-down of high-GWP refrigerants including R410A starting in 2025. New residential HVAC systems are transitioning to lower-GWP alternatives, with R454B being the primary replacement for heat pumps and mini-splits.

R454B has a Global Warming Potential (GWP) of 466 β€” compared to R410A’s 2,088. That’s a 78% reduction in climate impact per unit of refrigerant leaked.

Is R454B Safe?

R454B is classified A2L β€” meaning it is mildly flammable (like natural gas, but much less so). The “A” means low toxicity; the “2L” means it can burn under specific conditions with a slow flame spread rate. In real-world residential installations, this requires:

  • Leak detection sensors in some applications
  • Technicians trained and certified for A2L handling
  • Slightly modified installation practices
  • Code-compliant refrigerant volumes (typically within limits for residential)

We are A2L certified and have been installing R454B systems since their commercial availability. Safe handling is standard practice for our team.

πŸ’‘ What About My Existing R410A System?

If you have an existing R410A mini-split, you can continue to service it as normal. Reclaimed and recycled R410A will remain available for years. There is no rush to replace a working system solely due to the refrigerant transition β€” but when it’s time to replace, moving to R454B or R32 is the smart choice.

FAQ

R454B Questions Answered

Will R454B cost more to install than R410A?
Equipment costs are roughly comparable β€” the slightly different installation requirements (A2L certified technicians, potential leak detection) add minimal cost. As R454B becomes the standard, economies of scale will further close any price gap.
Do R454B systems qualify for Xcel rebates?
Yes β€” rebate eligibility is based on the system’s efficiency rating and cold-climate performance specs, not the refrigerant type. Cooper & Hunter PEAQ and other R454B systems qualify for Xcel’s standard ASHP rebates where they meet the efficiency criteria.
Is R454B more expensive to charge if there’s a leak?
Currently R454B is slightly more expensive per pound than R410A, but the difference is modest. More importantly, A2L refrigerant handling requires certified technicians β€” which we are. As adoption grows, prices will normalize.
Should I wait for R454B or buy an R410A system now?
If you need a system now, don’t wait. An R410A cold-climate mini-split purchased today will serve you well for 15–20 years. R410A will remain serviceable throughout that lifespan. If future-proofing is a priority, ask us about current R454B or R32 options in your needed capacity range.
